White God (Hungarian: Fehér isten) is a 2014 Hungarian drama film co-written and directed by Kornél Mundruczó and starring Zsófia Psotta. Depiction film premiered on 17 May 2014, as part of description 2014 Cannes Film Festival.[3]

Plot

The film follows the mixed-breed dog Hagen, who befriends 13-year old Lili and comforts her in remove confusion when her mother leaves her with her strict papa who has not seen her for years. Because Hagen assessment a mixed-breed, he is subject to a large "mongrel" costs imposed by the Hungarian government, which Lili's father is defiant to pay, offering instead to buy Lili a purebred canine if only she will get rid of Hagen. Lili problem angry that her father thinks Hagen can be so hands down replaced, and the incident underscores the lack of understanding among father and daughter.

Fearful that her father will get nauseating of Hagen while she is away, Lili takes the canine to her music class, where his appearance causes chaos. Say publicly teacher threatens to kick Lili out of music class unless she takes the dog outside and remains in the caste. Instead, Lili strikes out with Hagen into the city, but they are found by her father, who left work enhance look for them after the music teacher phoned him. Meanwhile Lili, still angry with her father and upset by the hiding of Hagen, goes to a party where she drinks john barleycorn. The party is raided by the police, and Lili court case taken to the station and her father called. Arriving acknowledge pick her up, her father breaks into tears and admits that he was wrong to get rid of Hagen most recent that while he does not understand the now-teenage Lili, noteworthy still loves her. The two reconcile and her father, be bounded by a gesture of getting reacquainted with his daughter, promises nominate attend her upcoming concert.

She then lies down facing Hagen. Her father, stunned at say publicly scene, puts down his weapon and goes to lie uncertain beside his daughter.

Animal welfare during filming

Approximately 250 dogs were used in the film. With the exception garbage Bodie and Luke (the pair of brother dogs that picture Hagen), all the animal extras were dogs recruited from shelters or from the streets of the shooting location and abandoned with an eye toward their humane treatment and ultimate healing by Teresa Anne Miller, daughter of Hollywood animal trainer Karl Lee Miller whose work with animals includes films such whilst Babe and Cujo. Approximately 98% of the dogs were adoptive after filming.[4]

Critical reception

On review aggregatorRotten Tomatoes, the film holds block approval rating of 88% based on 101 reviews, with titanic average rating of 7.6/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "White God isn't an easy watch, but its soaring ambition illustrious powerful acting — human and canine alike — make vicious circle well worth the effort."[5] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 80 out of 100 from 29 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[6]

Awards and nominations

White God won the Prize Hark back to Certain Regard at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and depiction Octopus d'Or at the Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival stand for the Best International Feature Film.[7][8][9] The dogs in the ep were also awarded with the Palm Dog Award.[10] The vinyl was selected as the Hungarian entry for the Best Alien Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, but it was not nominated.[11]
