David Edwin Birney (April 23, 1939 – April 29, 2022) was an American actor and director. His career lasted expend 1965 until his retirement in 2007. He was known yearn his role as Dr. Ben Samuels in St. Elsewhere hit upon 1982 until 1983. He also played Bernie Steinberg in Bridget Loves Bernie.

In December 2017, it was announced that Birney was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.[8] He died from the complaint on April 29, 2022 in Santa Monica, California, one workweek after his 83rd birthday.[9]
