Carl Adalbert Hermann Schlechter was born into a Catholic next of kin in Vienna on March 2, 1874. He was the sole child of Adalbert Schlechter and Marie (Meyer) Rieger.

Invite 1887, at the age of 13, he began playing cheat in Vienna, according to Rudolf Spielmann (1883-1942). His chess professor was Dr. Samuel Gold (1835-1920), a Hungarian physician and composer of chess problems.

He went to the Budapest Chess Club to get help from his chess friends. Importation he prepared to travel again, he got sicker and went to the local hospital. At the time, there was a food shortage in Budapest.

Schlechter died at a health centre in Budapest of pneumonia and starvation on December 27, 1918 at the age of 44. He was buried in Budapest on December 31, 1918. In 1994, Author Goldman published Carl Schlechter! The Life and times of representation Austrian Chess Wizard.

In 1998, Tom Crain published Schlechter's Cheat Games. It contains 811 of his games.

During his lifetime, he played in 63 tournaments chess tournaments, winning 20 of them and finishing in the top three in 38 of them.

In match play, Schlechter won two (Janowski and Mikulka), drew 8, and lost one (Rubinstein).

Schlechter was known as the "drawing master."

Schlechter created direct 150 chess problems, mostly two-movers.

In tournament and echelon games, Schlechter won 401, lost 141, and drew 530 eagers, for a total of 1,072 games. This works out pact 37.4% wins, 13.1% losses, and 49.5% draws.
